John Louis "The Bat" Battaglia is a businessman-turned mobster, and Carmen's ex-boyfriend. He is 13 years her senior, making him her 'sugar daddy'. He worked as a financial director in Los Angeles before joining the LA Crime Family. He was made a member of the crime family around 1956 by Lawyer-turned-mobster, Frank DeSimone. His brother, Charles Battaglia—also known as "Charlie Batts"—was a mob enforcer who participated in the infamous Hollywood murder of Anthony Brancato and Anthony Joseph Trombino ("The Two Tony's").
John operated one of the largest bookmaking operations in southern California. His multi-million dollar operation was coveted by other mobsters. Although he kept no secret of his racketeering to Carmen, he nevertheless became jealous over her growing associations with other mobsters. This made their relationship unstable, and eventually they broke up on a "business trip" to New York City.
